It's All About You

Our exceptional nursing care staff treat all our residents with respect, dignity and friendship in a warm family atmosphere. We offer holistic person-centred care for the best quality of life possible.

Our team works closely with you and your loved ones to tailor each care package to your specific wishes and requirements. They make sure the level of care is exactly right and comfortable for you at the same time.

Monte da Palhagueira is an officially registered Nursing Home in Portugal and follows the directives issued by the Portuguese Direcção-Geral de Saúde. The Nurses are registered Nurses with registration in Portugal. One of the directors, Dr. Rosemary Reid, is a medical doctor overseeing the quality and ongoing development of the medical policies of the Amesbury Abbey Group.

All our residents enjoy three delicious meals each day, either in one of two dining rooms, on the poolside terrace, or in their own rooms.

Social events play a key role, with activities organised throughout the week and a minibus on hand for making excursions to local sights and attractions.

Doctors and registered physiotherapists visit residents regularly to discuss our residents’ ongoing care needs. There is a hairdressing studio on site and we can arrange pedicurists and art therapists.

Convalescent Care

If you’re recovering after an illness or an operation, then let our team look after you on your road to recovery with our convalescent care options. We’ll be with you every step of the way.

Convalescence care provides short-term support by experienced professionals to those recovering from an injury, operation or illness, and allows for rehabilitation and recuperation whilst preventing re-admission.

A convalescent home often gives patients and their families some peace of mind knowing that there are medical professionals on hand in any emergency that may arise.

This type of care is goal-orientated with the end goal always being for the person to regain their independence as well as enough strength to cope without support.

Our convalescent carers can take the stress out of the routine aspects of care, such as medications, dressing, medical equipment and everyday personal care. Where needed, our team can support your everyday personal care which includes bathing, washing and dressing, until you’re ready to do this by yourself. This can reduce the risk of complications and further hospital admissions, allowing you to concentrate on what’s important – getting better.

Respite Care

Respite care offers short-term, temporary care for older people in one of our care homes when their usual care is unavailable.

Respite care is often part of recovery after an illness, accident or surgery when regular carers need additional support.

A respite stay can also be a way for a carers to have a break from care-related duties, knowing that the person will be properly looked after. This is very common when family members or friends are acting as a carer and take some time out to go on holiday for a few weeks.

There are many benefits of respite care for both the guest and their normal carer.

A respite care stay offers our guests increased social interaction, perhaps some new experiences in a different environment and a change of scenery – all great ways to lift your mood and improve wellbeing.

For the carer, a short break, provides an opportunity to rest, relax and recharge your batteries.

A respite stay could also serve as a trial stay to see if our care home might be a longer-term living option.

Secure and supportive with stunning surroundings, our respite care homes truly are your home away from home.

End-of-Life Care

It is an honour for us to support anyone on the emotional journey to the end of a life.

Nothing can take away the pain of facing the loss of someone you love, but our sensitive and warm end of life care and nursing within our luxury care home is there to support everyone involved, reducing pain and stress in an atmosphere of kindness, support and family.

The decision to seek quality end of life care can be difficult and hard to face, but we help families to see this as an important and positive step.

The very best end of life care extends beyond the careful monitoring and control of pain and other symptoms – it supports everyone involved both practically and psychologically.

Our dedicated carers and nurses understand that holistic end of life care should include all the practical aspects of care such as washing and feeding, but also the emotional care which is so important. They are there to help families and friends come to terms with the diagnosis and make the most of the time they have left with their loved ones.

There will be sadness, of course, but also some gentle laughter, re-living memories, re-telling tales, holding hands – and having someone always there for you all.

Your individual room

Residents can choose between three different categories of rooms. All are comfortable and well appointed and feature an en suite bathroom with room sizes ranging from 25 to 45 square meters. Rooms come furnished by us but equally you are welcome to bring your own furniture if you like and feel directly at home.

Premium rooms offer direct access to the garden terrace, a balcony or particularly good vistas.

Lunch and supper can be delivered to residents’ rooms or served in the central dining room with its large balcony and views across the valley, or the very comfortable dining area at the pool, as residents prefer.
